Vice President Physician Services Organization
Position Summary
The Vice President, Physician Services Organization reports directly to the Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for the Physician Services Organization and has executive responsibility for the strategy and operations of New York Presbyterian’s Medical Group.
This VP is the business leader for the medical groups and manages key strategies related to necessary market development, revenue and expense management, and program growth, where indicated. The VP ensures that the highest quality care and operational excellence is delivered across all service lines within the portfolio and partners with leaders across the system to achieve results.
The VP also plays a major role in the overall success of the medical groups by championing a seamless and coordinated system of care, inclusive of the following: ambulatory quality, patient access and service, health equity, physician and employee engagement, program development and innovation, ambulatory/hospital transitions management, community partnerships, population health, and accountable care. While the Ambulatory Care footprint includes various Service Lines and Clinical Operations the VP functions to convene all stakeholders and lead the overall success and system integration of the ambulatory platform.
As a member of the leadership team, the VP participates with the other colleagues and senior level executives in the overall management of the health system operations, system improvement, fiscal management, quality/safety and employee/physician experience to carry out the mission, vision, and annual goals of New York Presbyterian.
The VP Collaborates with the key stakeholders across the enterprise to define, align, and influence business strategy and drivers in order to effectively address the current and future needs of the NYP Healthcare System. Identifies, develops and facilitates new physician development business opportunities, physician co-management agreements, and the business aspects of integration that advance the Physician Service organization. Oversees the financial and administrative operations of the NYP Physician Services Organization and the NYP Medical Group. Ensures sound and consistent administrative and fiscal practices at different practice locations to increase revenues, market share and enhance resource utilization. Partners with System Hospitals to ensure robust communication of plans while collaborating with Columbia Doctors and Weill Cornell Physicians’ administrative staffs to foster partnerships as appropriate. Directs the assessment, analysis, and execution of financially feasible physician business strategies that will expand NYP Healthcare System capabilities and enhance its ability to provide value to its customers.
Essential Job Duties
- Works closely with SVPs, to address high level issues, policies and situations involving multiple Physician practices. Provides leadership and direction for the SVP’s strategic planning initiatives, financial planning, project management, and select program development activities.
- Develops the overall strategic plans necessary for short- and long-term success. Provides leadership and direction over the operations of the Physician Organization and outlines operational goals, objectives, and tactics to ensure that the necessary support and infrastructure needed is in place to meet business targets.
- Formulates and implements strategic and tactical plans to optimize operational efficiencies and market positioning as well as collaborates with other leaders to focus on systematically improving metrics related to business performance and revenue growth.
- Directs the development of NYP Healthcare System physician services organizations (PSO) through consolidation of staff and services at NYP Healthcare System locations.
- Keeps abreast of industry trends that could potentially pose opportunities for new physician business developments, joint ventures, and co-management. Works with Sr. Leadership team to assess strategic fit and feasibility for consideration.
- Participates in the evaluation of new physician practices as needed in conjunction with the Business Development and Legal teams. Coordinates and conducts due diligence processes with potential physician partners and NYP Healthcare System key stakeholders.
- Facilitates the development and execution of the annual operating budget in close collaboration with Finance and ensures business goals and financial targets are achieved.
- Develops and monitors financial reporting metrics on provider performance, including productivity, practice efficiency enhancements and total cost of care. Holds providers accountable to performance expectations and goals.
- Collaborates with Physician Leadership, Legal and Human Resources to develop appropriate compensation methodologies to attract and retain physicians within budgetary means.
- Coordinates with the Director - Revenue Cycle, Practice Managers and support staff employed by the MG CBO to ensure sound and consistent tools and processes across multiple locations, eliminating duplication of efforts where possible.
- Coordinates the physician practice efforts to convert to a single practice management system. Develops appropriate reports and methods for leveraging practice management platform for reporting, practice management and physician patient communication.
- Provides project leadership for physician practice development, physician co-management arrangements, implementation and management of business practice operations and development.
- Assists SVPs with oversight of the effectiveness of all Physician Service practices, processes and activities. Provides timely, accurate, and complete reports on the overall operating condition for SVPs to present to Sr. Leadership and Board of Directors.
- Supports integration of acquisitions and clinics, providing financial assessments, forecasts and modeling of future needs for physicians.
- Represents the SVPs at selected internal and external meetings with senior leadership, physicians, staff, and consultants as necessary.
- Performs all duties inherent to managerial role. Participates in hiring, training, evaluation and termination of assigned staff according to hospital policies and procedures.
- Performs other special projects and duties as assigned.

- Bachelor’s degree in Finance or Healthcare Administration or related field (R)
- Master’s degree (R)
Licensure/Certifications
- Certified Public Accountant (P)
Work Experience
- 10-15 years of prior executive leadership experience (R)
- Demonstrated skills and experience managing a physician service organization (R)
- Record of strong, effective working relationships with Senior Leaders, medical and professional staffs, and all levels of organization; Ability to navigate complex political environments (R)
- Demonstrated ability to manage complex projects and people, with a solid understanding of the Hospital’s operating components (R)
- Experience in formalized business and strategic planning activities, management and financial planning, and budgetary cost controls (R)
- Extremely strong interpersonal skills, and written and oral communication skills; Exceptional attention to details and accuracy (R)
- Team oriented with demonstrated expertise in motivating others to establish and successfully achieve goals (R)
- Highly organized and efficient, capable of juggling multiple tasks and meeting deadlines in a fast paced environment (R)
