Vice President Laboratory Operations
Position Summary
Reporting to the Senior Vice President, the Vice President (VP) Laboratory Operations will function as the top executive leader of Enterprise Laboratory Services and will be responsible for overseeing day-to-day operations, developing strategy, implementing business plans, and fostering a high-performance, patient-oriented culture. The position is responsible for the integration of laboratory, clinical, operational, and financial functions of Enterprise Laboratories and provides effective leadership, management, direction, and administration of Enterprise Lab Operations that include planning, budgeting, evaluation of personnel, equipment, space, and service commitments. Defines and executes system wide strategies for the laboratories. Interfaces with clinical faculty, chairs, and deans for Weill Cornell and Columbia and acts as the principal point of escalation for regional and local Chief Operating Officers. Works closely with the Senior Vice President to ensure Enterprise Laboratories are operating efficiently and consistent with NYP values and vision.
Essential Job Duties
- Plans, coordinates, and manages administrative activities of the lab areas to ensure efficient and effective operation to meet patient care needs and institutional objectives. Evaluates, formulates, and implements approved administrative systems to provide efficient and cost-effective management of departmental activities, including patient scheduling, billing, patient reports, information collection, retrieval and storage, materials management, etc.
- Maintains effective communication with hospital administration, department heads, staff, patients, and outside agencies to ensure effective laboratory operations and enterprise alignment. Ensures efficient coordination of enterprise laboratories’ activities with numerous hospital services and departments. Addresses job related inquiries, manages issues, takes corrective action, and refers unresolved matters to appropriate parties as necessary. Represents Enterprise Laboratory services on internal and external committees.
- Analyzes and prepares data, including but not limited to, lab related activities, volume reports, budget, resource optimization, and process/service improvement for submission to Senior Leadership. Designs and advances best practices for the department.
- Oversees and drives enterprise departmental compliance with various regulatory agencies. Participates. Designs, develops, and implements programs that support the organization’s performance improvement and vision.
- Utilizes strong knowledge of process improvement methodologies. Designs, implements, and participates in the development of enterprise quality control programs and conducts follow-ups to ensure effectiveness of system wide department activities. Establishes and maintains safety standards for maximum protection of patients and employees.
- Compiles and analyzes data related to enterprise laboratories operations, i.e., clinical procedures, patient/specimen flow, etc. Prepares/assists with preparation of operational and capital budgets for approval, monitor and reconcile expenditures and variances.
- Establishes and manages new enterprise programs, capital budget, operating budgets, and fiscal reports. Works with site Laboratory Directors to develop, allocate, and administer the annual budgets. Implements corrective action plan to eliminate unfavorable variances.
- Ensures effective operations and coordinates with laboratory site directors in managing department personnel. Oversees and directly manages assigned departments, including staff assignments, work schedule, on the job training, payroll, performance evaluations, and related functions. Interprets and implements hospital/departmental policies and procedures.
- Leads stewardship efforts across the enterprise. This role will be responsible for enterprise testing strategy and rationalization. Acts as primary contact with local and enterprise Chief Medical Officers, Quality, and High Value Care initiatives.
- Develops strategies for system changes to align with current trends in health care and keeps the laboratories competitive and efficient; works to integrate service excellence with fiscally responsible improvements. Ensures delivery systems meet patient care needs. Ensures that all clinical patient support services are effectively integrated into the daily practice and patient care regimens. Submits planned and ad-hoc reports to Senior Leadership as necessary.
- Oversee the full lifecycle of Laboratory equipment — from strategic procurement and deployment to maintenance, upgrades, and end-of-life disposal — ensuring optimal performance, cost efficiency, regulatory compliance, and alignment with long-term enterprise operational goals.
- Maintains fiscal responsibility for enterprise laboratories through analysis and cost efficiency of services. Prepares appropriate reports and directs initiatives to enhance revenues, reduce expenses, and maintain quality.
- Assists in planning, development, and implementation of the departmental and s ystem wide initiatives, participates in short/long term strategic planning, and maintains up-to-date and innovative knowledge in the laboratory field.
- Lead senior management business-level discussions and decisions involving business vision and strategy, enterprise-level decisions, standardization of best practices, and project governance oversight.
- Ensures that goals and objectives are consistent with NYP’s long-term vision and strategy for laboratory solutions. Works diligently with multidisciplinary teams on realizing the vision and strategy.
- Investigates, evaluates, and remains versed in emerging products, practices, and solutions, including industry and market trends.
- Performs all duties inherent to managerial role. Participates in hiring, training, evaluation, and termination of assigned staff according to hospital policies and procedures.
- Performs other special projects and duties as assigned.

Work Experience
- 10+ years progressive experience in leading a clinical department (R)
- 3+ years’ experience in a Director role (R)
- Emphasis on Health Care Systems, preferably hospital or multi-site care organization (R)
- Demonstrated ability to exercise discretion and make decisions and recommendations, which have impact on project outcomes (R)
- Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to develop excellent and effective working relationships with Senior Management and Clinical Leadership (R)
- Demonstrated ability to conduct senior level meetings (R)
- Strong leadership, management, and organizational skills (R)
