At NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, Sergeants do more than supervise Security Officers in campuses —they take part in amazing stories.

Sergeant provides supervision of the security officers on a day-to-day basis. 

  • Conducts periodic inspections of officers to ensure Security Officers are in proper uniform, post locations are clean and orderly, memo books are complete, and officers are carrying out post and patrol procedures.
  • Sergeants must demonstrate the ability to be able to instruct officers on their job requirements at specific post, writes reports relating to their inspections, and observes activities on post and patrol areas which ensures security and safety policies and procedures are within compliance.
  • Patrols the building and property of the hospital and college at various times during a shift.  Patrols include the reporting of: fire safety issues, inspections of security electronic systems, challenging unauthorized persons, provide employee or visitor escorts, restrains a patient or unauthorized person, and converse with hospital and college employees on security issues.
  • Supervises the daily activities of the security officers on duty.  This includes: ensuring officers are on posts and posts are covered, ensure officers get designated breaks, properly discipline officers not following hospital or department policies and procedures, respond to situations involving security issues, assisting security officers in the performance of their duties and other employees when necessary.
  • Sergeants must be able to demonstrate the ability to observe all activities occurring on the shift; to listen effectively to information related to the supervision of the shift; write reports on shift activities, unusual occurrences, incidents, and statistics; make decisions related to the supervision of the shift; use proper judgment in administering decisions, and communicate appropriately to all department and hospital staff, in both verbal and written form.
  • Sergeants should manifest confidence and presence and be able to effectively resolve conflicts/issues, work independently, manage stressful situations, and plan and organize work.
  • Sergeant must demonstrate proper writing skills by completing documents which are: neat and legible, contain proper grammar and spelling, and are filled out completely and correctly.  Sergeants must have basic typing skills to complete reports which are on computer.
  • Knowledgeable in the use and operation of all department electronic systems: Evolv scanners, Cisco Emergency 911 system, fire alarm systems, CCTV systems, phones, intercoms, oxygen and generator alarms, radio systems, Morse Watchman tour system, access control computer, video ID system, electronic key box, e-mail, word processing, incident reporting and all other department computer programs.
  • Attends all meetings within the department, or hospital as required.
  • Evaluates the work performance of officers on their shift and on an on-going basis and prepares annual reviews for officers.

This shift is 11:00pm - 7:00am, Rotating weekends

Preferred Criteria

  • Bachelor’s degree, military experience, or 2 years of collegiate courses in criminal justice or related field.
  • Driver's License.
  • NYCFD Certificate of fitness as Fire Safety Director.

Required Criteria

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • 3 to 5 years of related  experience required.
  • NYS Security Guard License.
  • Knowledge of computers.
  • Knowledge of Fire Safety.
  • Basic supervisory skills.
  • Basic training skills.
  • Completion of Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification required within 90 days of starting in role.

Please note that all roles require on-site presence (variable by role). Therefore, all employees should live within a commutable distance to NYP.

NYP will not reimburse for travel expenses.

$33.00-$46.80/Hourly
