During World War II, Dr. Charles Richard Drew helped pioneer a long-term technique for plasma storage that helped in the production and transfer of blood. This method helped bring about longer-term storage of blood — aka creating “blood banks.” Then in 1928, Dr. Georgios Nikolaou Papanicolaou published his first findings on cervical cancer detection that lead to the Pap smear test. Both of these innovative professionals worked within the NYP network, and their dedication led to huge shifts in the medical field. Our culture of empowering those who look forward, still stands today.
This was most recently on display during 2020. NYP was not only one of the first hospitals in New York to begin successfully testing for COVID-19 using PCR tests, but we also made sure our staff stayed as safe as possible while doing so through rigorous safety protocols.
