Social Worker - The Horizon Program - 4N - Days

NewYork-Presbyterian Westchester Behavioral Health Center offers a special track for Orthodox Jewish patients designed to enhance their comfort level during hospitalization. The inpatient unit is open to adults 18 years of age and over with general psychiatric disorders, and addresses the unique needs of patients requiring kosher meals and other cultural accommodations. A flexible schedule allows opportunities for religious observance..

Each patient is carefully assessed, and individualized treatment plans are developed in consultation with referring clinicians, family members, and the patient's other supports in the community. The treatment program includes a full range of clinical services, including:

  • Comprehensive diagnostic evaluation
  • Individual, group, and family therapy
  • Medication management
  • Health education
  • Discharge planning

Therapeutic Environment

The unit offers a full schedule of educational, therapeutic, and recreational groups, with appropriate gender separation for certain activities, and incorporates time for daily religious observance. Program adjustments are made for Sabbath and special holidays, and flexible visiting hours are accommodated. Staff members have received specialized training regarding cultural sensitivity, religious rituals and requirements, and patient expectations. 

Kosher dietary restrictions are strictly followed in the dining room and throughout the unit at all times. Patient bedrooms and bathrooms are separated by gender. Religious supplies, including prayer books, are provided. Tefillin are provided as needed on request. A special comfort room is available for family members and guests visiting patients. 

Treatment Team

The specially trained staff provides expert psychiatric care in a discreet, comfortable environment while understanding and respecting the emotional, cultural, and spiritual needs of the patient population. An interdisciplinary team of professionals, including psychiatrists, social workers, nursing staff, and psychosocial rehabilitation specialists, meet daily with patients to review and revise individual treatment plans and goals. Rabbis are available to meet regularly with patients to provide counseling. Team assignments give special consideration to cultural and religious sensitivities.

Social Workers function in the role of a Treatment Care Coordinators (primary therapists) and carry a case load of 7-8 patients. In a collaborative team setting, social workers meet with patients daily (Mon-Fri) together with the attending MD and nursing staff. The clinical teams also meet daily in the morning for nursing report, and for post-rounds following patient rounds. Social workers are responsible for family contact (including facilitation of family meetings), collaboration with outpatient providers and discharge planning in addition to performing psychosocial and psychiatric assessments, treatment planning and short-term therapeutic interventions.

This position will work 5 days a week, Monday -Friday days per week (8:30am - 4:30 pm) and is located at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital / Westchester Behavioral Health Center


Preferred Criteria

  • Prior experience in the treatment of psychiatric patients with eating disorders

  • Knowledge of Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT)

  • Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)

Required Criteria

  • Master’s Degree in Social Work (MSW)

  • Licensed Masters Social Worker (LMSW) by the State of New York

  • Limited Permit (must supply exam date prior to start of employment)

  • Basic Life Support Certification from the American Heart Association
