POSITION SUMMARY:  To provide a high level of clinical care to the neurosurgical patients under the supervision of a physician in the inpatient and outpatient settings; support the clinical, educational and fiscal objectives of the neurosurgical  services division.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  New York State Physician Assistant License and Registration; NCCPA Board Certification. Must be a member in good standing of the Department of Surgery and maintain current certifications including ACLS and BCLS or equivalent (FCCS/ or ATLS).

Provide active support of the service excellence in the Medical Center, consistent with the Medical Center’s determination that service excellence will distinguish it in the marketplace. All Medical Staff are expected to vigorously pursue objectives to improve customer satisfaction in the department and through collaboration with other departments.

Provide complete medical and surgical care of the neurosurgical patient from admission to discharge including consultative and outpatient settings. Perform and document a thorough history and physical exam with the ability to derive a comprehensive clinical impression, or set of differential diagnoses, and concomitant plan of management including diagnostic studies. Accurately and efficiently assess the patient’s clinical status in a competent manner, with presentation to the supervising/ attending physician. Demonstrate a strong command and appropriate application of clinical and basic knowledge in the diagnostic process.

Demonstrate an ability to make appropriate, highly complex clinical decisions and take effective action. Perform on-going assessment of therapy and modify patient management plan as necessary with a matured and broad fund of knowledge. Initiate therapeutic measures and notify the supervising/attending physician immediately. Recognize clinical limitations and seek appropriate and prompt assistance. Conduct oneself in a manner that reflects respect and dignity for all patients, staff, and visitors. Conduct oneself in a manner that reflects care and respect for the Medical Center’s facilities.

Provide surgical assistance in the operating room.

Maintain in good standing one’s participation as a provider in all relevant third party payor programs including, without limitation, Medicare and Medicaid.

Participate in such managed care programs pursuant to the provisions in the Hospital’s provider contracts.  Further, you shall exercise every effort to expeditiously complete applications for all the managed care plans with which your patients are enrolled to maximize the ability to accept these patients and be compensated.

Abide by the Medical Center’s Legal Compliance Policy and Program including the Code of Conduct.

Promptly notify the Chief Physician Assistant or supervising Physician concerning any facts or circumstances that may expose the Medical Center or its Affiliates or any of their trustees, officers, directors, employees or agents to liability or penalty for any violation of federal, state or local law, rule or regulation.

Support and uphold the Medical Center’s Mission Statement and service excellence/customer service program.

Comply with the Bylaws, rules and regulations of the Medical Center and the Medical Staff and all Federal, state and local statutes and regulations with respect to your practice.

At all times be qualified, professionally competent, duly licensed, have a current controlled substances registration and be a member in good standing of the Medical Staff of the Hospital.

Abide by all Medical Center and PC policies and procedures.

Participate in budgetary and cost containment initiatives for the individual department, practice and the Medical Center at large.

Participate in continuous quality and performance improvement initiatives.

Meet all standards of care relevant to specific responsibilities.

Participate in the teaching and supervision of physician assistant students assigned to the neurosurgical service.

Develop and maintain a high level of customer service by displaying courtesy, tact and diplomacy with patients, staff, colleagues, visitors, vendors and representatives of other institutions and government and regulatory agencies. Display a keen sense of integrity and a respect for matters of confidentiality.

Be directly responsible to the Chairman of the Department of Surgery, Director of Neurosurgery, supervising physician and Chief Physician Assistant in all matters concerning the Hospital/ Practice and its activities. Attend and participate in departmental, hospital and practice functions.

  • Assist with discharge planning/needs of patients and document discharge summary

  • Act as procedural assistant including first and second assist in the operating room.

  • Inset and remove nasogastric tubes.
