Mental Health Care Saves Lives: Reduce the Stigman

The Special Needs Clinic at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center offers a comprehensive mental health program for children and families whose lives have been affected by chronic medical illness. Children and adolescents with chronic medical illness are treated in the clinic along with their family members or partners. Children with chronic medical illness can have complex neuropsychiatric/behavioral/learning problems which require careful diagnosis and treatment. The program has developed an intensive, family-based approach to treatment for the complex medical and psychosocial needs of these children and their families.  In addition, clinicians utilize empirically supported psychotherapies to address problems of mood and anxiety that occur in the context of chronic medical illnesses.
