Microbiology Technical Specialist – Clinical Microbiology Laboratory – Full Time

In this role, you will be challenged, engaged and trusted as a leader on our Clinical Microbiology team with responsibilities including administration, planning and development of new techniques, assays and methods, technical guidance, staff training, and development of new and more complicated procedures.  Overall, you will assist in coordination of a wide variety of technical activities to ensure efficient operation along with consulting with Chief of Service and Medical Director as needed.

Channel your project management skills and take on this pivotal position by working closely with laboratory leadership to coordinate a wide variety of technical activities to ensure efficient operation.  The Technical Specialist will perform qualitative and quantitative tests using various methods, procedures and instruments, and will maintain and calibrate equipment as needed.  They will also oversee QC and QA programs and report results per established protocol.  Developing and implementing new and improved test methods that meet or exceed regulatory requirements is an integral part of the role along with implementing procedural changes to improve workflow and increase productivity.  The Technical Specialist will be an active participant in making decisions regarding new testing and instrumentation, and perform evaluations of new methods/instruments in order to choose the most suitable system.  They will interact and cooperate with vendors in developing new products and enhancements to be used in the laboratory.  The Technical Specialist will play an integral part with in-service training and competency for laboratory staff.  Assist with developing appropriate materials management systems and inventory control which effect cost control measures and enhance productivity and efficiency.

Utilize your data-driven mindset to generate various reports in order to detect errors, trends, and other exceptions as appropriate, including but not limited to, investigating abnormal findings and reviewing and verifying results performed by laboratory staff.  The Technical Specialist will occasionally perform bench work, assist in troubleshooting procedures when necessary, and serve as a resource for technical questions relating to instrument performance or procedures. 

Develop your technical and leadership skills by attending and participating in administrative and other meetings as required along with various committees as requires/requested.  The Technical Specialist will also perform delegated supervisory functions in the absence of a Supervisor.

This is a full-time position working Monday – Friday from 9am – 5pm, with rotating weekend responsibility. 

Preferred Criteria

  • Current ASCP certification

  • Possess strong knowledge and previous experience with maintaining regulatory requirements

  • Advanced courses in Microbiology

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Required Criteria

  • Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology or related science

  • Six years’ experience in specialized Microbiology testing

  • New York State Clinical Laboratory Technologist licensure from the New York Education department

  • Cognitive ability to develop and troubleshoot sophisticated analytical procedures

  • Excellent technical skills including product development and training skills
