Medical Legal Administrative Assistant - Per Diem - Social Work Department

  • Serves as a liaison between the New York Mental Hygiene Legal Service and the GSH clinicians
  • Provides records and other information, as requested, in accordance with established laws, policies and procedures
  • Assists in reviewing and responding to medical-legal inquiries, in accordance with established laws, policies and procedures
  • Assists with the preparation of legal paperwork for patient transfers and court appearances
  • Serves patients with legal documents (i.e. subpoenas, summonses), as required
  • Coordinates court appearances for patients and provides notification to all appropriate parties, as required and as requested by patient
  • Records receipt of and tracks 3-day letters. Follows up with treatment team staff prior to end of the 72-hour period
  • Tracks court ordered retentions
  • Reviews census daily, records and tracks all new 9.37 and 9.39 involuntary patients and dates of status expiration
  • Educates and provides support to hospital staff regarding the completion of paperwork to be used in patient transfer and other proceedings
  • Maintains a working knowledge of the NYS Mental Hygiene Law and Office of Mental Health (OMH) regulations pertaining to patient rights and legal proceedings
  • Coordinates and maintains a legal status tracking system and filing system
  • Performs related duties, as required

Preferred Criteria

  • Previous healthcare experience working in a behavioral health setting
  • Paralegal experience is a plus

Required Criteria

  • Bachelor’s Degree in related field
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft applications (i.e. Word, Excel)
  • Excellent communication and organization skills
