“Life doesn’t stop because you have an illness. But the emotional impact that comes with it can block treatment, or even endanger the patient’s condition. We had a man in his forties with pancreatic cancer, who was informed that he would need to be fed through a tube in his stomach. At first, we got him eating solid food again and he proudly said, ‘I’m not going home on artificial nutrition.’

After the second surgery, we realized his stomach could not support a normal diet. He had to give up solid food, or he would have no chance of survival. I helped him to weigh his options and consider what is most important. Finally, he agreed to the recommended treatment and was able to go home.”
